Life in Batam is very different from Singapore. Its amazing how these 2 places are just slightly more than 20 km away from each other and yet worlds apart, although some of the people are pretty much the same in terms of behaviour in both islands.
At first it was quite hard for me to adjust to the new house, new place and new life in Batam. Fortunately we met a good friend of my wife's brother whom I'm really grateful for, he helped us so much to adjust to life in Batam.
One big change is shopping in the wet market in Batam.

The wet market in Batam is nowhere as clean as Singapore's no doubt. The nearest wet market to our house is the Avava Fresh market, but the price of stuffs here are quite expensive. We'll get here if absolutely necessary and to get fresh chicken - yes you get to pick the chicken and the butcher will slaughter it, pluck the feathers and cut it up for you.
But for most of the time I and my wife would go to another market in Penuin which is slightly further away, but much bigger and offers more varieties along with lots of cooked food stalls.

We always prefer going to Penuin market to have breakfast before doing the shopping. There's absolutely delicious Medanese kway teow and chicken noodles, banana and vegetable fritters that became our breakfast favourites. Also due to the variety of vegetables and sundries, this place is a very convenient shopping place.
Every time my wife and I visit Batam we still drop by Penuin market to get our favourite food. Feels very nostalgic every time we do that.
